EAHS Social Norms Marketing & EAMS Public Education Campaigns

East Aurora High School Social Norms Marketing Campaign

What is Social Norms Marketing?

One major factor that contributes to teens' choices about drug use (including alcohol and marijuana) is their perception of what they think their peers are doing.

We know (from data throughout the country and at EAHS) that teens and adults largely overestimated the number of youth who actually use alcohol. This false perception pressures youth to use these substances in order to fit in.

Social Norms Marketing strives to prevent teen alcohol and tobacco use by correction this misperception among students, parents, and school staff through EAHS survey data and marketing techniques. Since teachers and parents are two of the most credible sources of information related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs for EAHS students, it's important that we all share with EAHS teens the message:

MOST teens choose not to use alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

East Aurora Middle School Public Education Campaign

What is a Public Education Campaign?

A Public Education Campaign is a prevention program that uses posters, newsletters, and other media to increase knowledge and awareness of important health issues.

These campaigns can communicate information about personal risk or protective factors. This campaign is currently implemented in all three District 131 middle schools (Cowherd, Simmons, and Waldo). This program has been an ongoing campaign since September 2005.

The East Aurora Public Education Campaign's main objective is to "Increase the awareness of risk and harm associated with alcohol, tobacco, and other drug usage among students at Waldo, Cowherd, and Simmons middle schools."

In the spring of 2008, the 6th and 8th grade students took the Illinois Youth Survey. The IYS will provide valuable data that will be used to enhance the message used in the campaign.
